Opening an account in a bank is a fairly simple and easy process, but you should know in advance what is required to open a bank account. Not all banks require the same documents, but it’s better to prepare all of the ones listed below and not need them. Get your account up and running right away
Opening a checking account in your local branch may come with a few eligibility requirements. You have to be 18 years old or older in order to open an account. However, most banks allow minors to be listed as account holders, together with their parents or legal guardians.
If another bank closed your account due to mismanagement, your application may be turned down.
What do I need to open a bank account?
Whether you’re opening your first bank account or switching banks, here’s the list of documents you want to bring to the bank to make sure the entire process is fast and that all the documents are there.
When opening a checking account, you’ll need to bring your valid government-issued photo ID. The bank officials need to be able to ID you and verify that you are who you say you are.
Most of the people bring a valid driver’s license. But if you are not a driver, you can apply for a state-issued ID and have it with you when you go to the bank to open an account.
Also, if you have a valid passport or a U.S. military identification card, you can check with the bank if they accept any of these and bring them as your identification.
If you’re not a U.S. citizen, you may be able to open an account with identification issued in your home country.
Social Security card or individual taxpayer identification number
When gathering documentation to open a bank account, make sure you have a valid Social Security number (SSN) or individual taxpayer identification number (TIN). In case you have neither of these two, you can apply for the ITIN by filling out Form W-7 to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
You will also need proof of address when going to the bank to open an account. You may bring a lease or utility bill with your name and current address on it.
Generally, the minimum deposit for opening a bank account is between $25 and $100. Most of the banks require a minimum deposit.
Different types of bank accounts
Depending on the type of account you wish to open, certain banks may require some additional documentation.
If you’re a student and want to have a student account that can have different benefits, you’ll have to prove that you’re enrolled at a qualified school. If you want to have the benefits that a student account offers, you should bring your student ID with you to access them.
If you’re opening a joint account with another person, make sure the other person is present with all of the documentation listed above. If two people share the same account, they both have the same liability for the account.
